Dactylorhiza fuchsii
Several species of spotted orchids with leaves spotted on the upper surface and a purple inflorescence grow in Estonia. The common spotted orchid is distinguished from others by the deeply three-lobed lip of its flowers and broad leaves tapering towards the stem. The underside of the leaves has a silvery sheen.
Being relatively undemanding of its habitat, the common spotted orchid is one of our most common orchids. It can be found blooming in midsummer in Estonian forest and swamp edges, moist meadows or along roadsides.
All orchids, including the common spotted orchid, are protected species in Estonia and it is prohibited to pick them, transplant them into gardens or damage their habitats.
The colour of the common spotted orchid’s flowers varies from white to pale purple and their pattern ranges from rows of dots to dashes and loops. The common name “common spotted orchid” refers to the abundance of the species and the spots on its leaves.
