The Estonian Museum of Natural History participates in the LIFE Integrated Project “Implementation of National Climate Change Adaptation Activities in Estonia” (LIFE21-IPC-EE-LIFE-SIP AdaptEst/101069566). The total budget of the project, implemented from 01.01.2023 to 31.03.2032, is 18.8 million euros.
Partners
The lead partner of the project is the Ministry of Climate.
Project partners are: the Environmental Board, the Estonian Environment Agency, the IT Centre of the Ministry of the Environment, the Estonian Environmental Research Centre, the State Forest Management Centre, the Estonian Museum of Natural History, the Geological Survey of Estonia, the University of Tartu, the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn University, the Estonian Fund for Nature, the Estonian Nature Conservation Centre, the Estonian Private Forest Association, Tartu Hunting Club, and OÜ Ilvesmaa.
Objectives
The main objective of the project is to increase the resilience of various ecosystems in a changing climate, improve society’s preparedness for climate change adaptation (through the updating of weather forecasting models and climate scenarios), and ensure a positive socio-economic impact through the sustainable use of resources, supported by good practices, pilot initiatives, demonstration activities, and capacity-building measures.
Sub-objectives:
- Preserving the diversity of species, habitats, and landscapes.
- Supporting bioeconomy sectors important for Estonia’s long-term sustainability.
- Supporting the economic sector in the adaptation process.
- Preparing public authorities and citizens to cope with the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
Role of the Estonian Museum of Natural History
The role of the Museum is to develop an exhibition on hazardous weather phenomena and climate change in cooperation with the Estonian Environment Agency, as well as to organise summer camps on the same topic.
