The Estonian Museum of Natural History displays 150 species of mushrooms

15. September 2017

From 15 to 24 September the Estonian Museum of Natural History displays annual mushroom exhibition, which this year takes place for the 55th time. During 10 days both edible, non-edible, conditionally edible and poisonous mushrooms are showcased.

Over 7,000 fungus species have been found in Estonia, nearly 400 of these are edible for humans. Roughly 200 species are poisonous to a varying degree and must not be put into the basket. A single rule with no exceptions applies to eating mushrooms: eat only the ones that you know for certain. The Estonian Museum of Natural History’s exhibition gives an overview of edible and non-edible mushrooms and draws attention to how to recognize poisonous mushrooms.

Alongside with displaying the diversity of mushrooms the exhibition this year has another focus: it asks who are the so-called mushroom worms, why we find them in the mushrooms and if it is okay to eat a mushroom with a maze of worm tunnels in it.

The exhibition is open from 15 to 24 September, from Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 18 pm and on Thursdays from 10 am to 19 pm.

The making of the exhibition is supported by the Environmental Investment Centre.
